This is a multi-media program that combines a variety of works from the early to late Baroque with images and narratives relaying the life and scientific achievements of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) – which Tafelmusik toured from 2009 (initially conceived to correspond with the International Year of Astronomy) through 2011. Each segment features a distinct musical work preceded by a brief narrative and accompanied by beautiful images associated with Galileo’s achievements; in this case, the work is Vivaldi’s Concerto in A for 2 Violins, Op.3, No.5, from which the opening Allegro and Largo are performed. It features violinists Jeanne Lamon, Julia Wedman, and Geneviève Gilardeau.
The latest Noteworthy video spotlights the composer Alban Berg (1885-1935) – whose 127th birthday we marked on February 9, as well as the famed pianist Glenn Gould, who performs Berg’s Piano Sonata in B-. Along with his teacher, Arnold Schoenberg and fellow student Anton Webern, Berg belongs to the so-called Second Viennese School that helped open the door to musical modernism in the early 20th century – expanding notions of harmony, melody, and form. With a style more overtly lyrical than his colleagues, Berg has enjoyed considerable success with audiences and performers alike, in particular with works such as his Violin Concerto, the Lyric Suite for String Quartet, the operas Wozzeck and Lulu, and the Piano Sonata. In this video, Gould brings his distinct sound and style to this magnificent single-movement sonata, in an impressive HD movie. <span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: TH; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">Watch the VideoKRU HARRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10600857647650861135noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8224198865209493262.post-25174050358661575282012-02-15T22:08:00.000-08:002012-02-15T22:08:50.559-08:00VALENTINE’S PLAYLIST FROM VIOLINIST RAY CHEN<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: TH; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">The latest feature is a Valentine’s Day treat: their first Celebrity Playlist from rising star Australian violinist Ray Chen – whose new release on Sony Classical features the famed violin concertos of Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn. Benjamin Zander’s TED Talk:Classical Music with Shining Eyes
Their new Noteworthy video is a rather extended one for this spot: a 20-minute lecture, taken from the famed TED Talks, by conductor / music professor Benjamin Zander, entitled “Classical Music with Shining Eyes”. With passion and humor, Mr. Zander takes the audience through a discussion of Chopin’s Prelude in E- (No.4 from 24 Preludes, Op.28) to reveal how everyone can follow and understand the musical narrative – and thereby experience the type of powerful emotion that classical music is uniquely capable of offering. This power, Mr. Zander explains, is revealed through the “shining eyes” of the listener (or performer) – and he imagines what a glorious world it would be if everyone knew and loved classical music. Let us know what you think!!
Through his 104 symphonies, 83 string quartets, 60 piano sonatas, Haydn established the working principles of “sonata form”, and many other aspects that defined the music of the late 18th century. This joins other 1-Click Concerts – featuring music of the Modern Period and the Solo Vocal genre.
Bach. The commercial featured an elaborate construction of hundreds of individually shaped and precisely tuned wooden bars – an enormous xylophone, if you will – placed on a gradually sloped hillside in a Japanese forest. With a background of flowing water and chirping birds, a wooden ball descends hundreds of feet across these bars, sounding out the obbligato melody from Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” (from Cantata No.147). The results are both impressive and quite moving. How this promoted sales, we’re not sure, but it sure got our attention – and admiration. Tell us what you think!
With the latter recordings, for example, Zinman defied the early skeptics by demonstrating the validity of adopting Beethoven’s original metronome markings, offering a lighter approach to phrasing and pulse than is commonly heard with these works – in turn yielding fresh and infectious renderings that audience embraced in the millions. In this insightful and broad discussion, Maestro Zinman reviews his rewarding association with the Tonhalle Orchestra and the path that led to their impressive and innovative recordings. The two also discuss the Maestro’s evolving repertoire interests – following his earlier and celebrated association with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, some upcoming projects with the Tonhalle, his love of teaching, his sober views on the current state of American classical music, and much more. Our feature also includes a 1-Click David Zinman Concert, with full streams for subscribers, and a set of David Zinman videos. Don’t miss this important and fascinating discussion with a true giant among modern conductors!

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">
